About the Project
None of us seem to be getting any younger, therefore thoughts about better ways of living are often considered. The clients for this home wanted to live on one level and allow for better accessibility as they moved into their more senior years. For this reason all of their areas were designed on the lower level, while additional guest spaces are accommodated on the upper level. The master bedroom is designed to the eastern side of the house to allow for access to the front courtyard and the early morning eastern sun in winter. All the living areas are orientated to the north to capitalise on the controlled northern sun for winter and also allow the cooling breezes through summer. The flow of the living space to outside has been cleverly executed through a commercial grade bi-fold glass door that folds away and out of sight allowing seamless inside/outside connection.
All the utility areas were located to the south and the west to create a buffer zone from the hot western sun and the cold southerly winds. The upper level is fully self-contained and also has it's own north facing living area and deck. Two bedrooms and a bathroom were also located in this westerly wing, which also allowed for good zonally separated guest and resident areas. This is a home that will age gracefully.
